Approved For Release 2002/01/15 : CIA-RDP80-01794R000100200025-2 21 August 1970 SG-70/291 MEMORANDUM FOR: Chief, RiD/ADB SUBJECT : Uso of 1600 bp(. Tape Drive for the SC-4360 33. 1. With regard to your suggestion that we obtain a 1600 bpi tape drive for the SC-4360, I was told the followinq by the Stromerg Datagraphix representative. An 1011 or other "forelgn" tape drive using 1600 bpi cannot be hooked to the SC-113G0 because the 1600 bpi Is phase-encoded and the SC-4360 requires IJtZI record- "Ve x'? ing. Only the Stron1'7erg12-tape drive ha:, the capability of 1n~s?;"-" converting phase-encoded to IIRZI without building a special inter- cc face, and It rents for $535/month. In addition, we would have to have the SC-1,360 modified to accept data at 60 KB and this costs $100 (one-time charge) plus an additional $95/month on the rental for n total of $630/month. This is $380 more per month than we are paying for the IBM 2401 Nod 1. This seems a high price to pay for a 30% increase in recording speed and the convenience of accepting either 1600 or 800 bpi. 2. Actual throughput of the SC-11360 is only 4,000-4,500 paring/ hour because we have to change film every 100 feet, rather than rated speed of 6,000-7,000 page-5/hour.,'The rD-4440 has a 1,100 fc,it film magazine, records up to 20,000'pagns/hour, and rents for about $4,000/month plus tape drive. It'ie 'recommended that we wait until our work load justifies an SD-4440 pnd then change equipment rather than trying to upgrade the . SC-4360.
