Sorel SUBJECT: NASA Data Storage and Retrieval REFERENCE: Letter to Admiral Rsborn from. NASA dated 24 August 1965 1. Task Team III is engaged in a study of the overall effectiveness of a0 =unity programs for procuring and processing selected foreign lications. It was felt desirable that, during the course of delibe- rations on processing of foreign publications, techniques and procedures utilized by activities other than those in the community be identified and analyzed. 2.. In this context, visited Mr. Mel Day 25X1 A of the Scientific and Technical Information Division, NASA on 30 June 1965. Mr. Day discussed the overall NASA do nt storage and retrieval system as well as the production system for their various S&T reports. Emphasis was placed by Mr. Day on the role of foreign publications as sources of potentially valuable scientific and technical information. 3. NASA has a translation capability primarily for inhouse, ad translation requests. These translations and translations from h sources are abstracted and indexed in NASA's journal, cientific and al +er s ace Re r s , and appear in publications owe .ng house NASA's translations which have a distribution limitation are announced only in the Classified Scientific and Technical Aer amt ;. Still other translations of Interest are abstracted and indexed in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautic's journal, InerrnatioW l,erosoece Abstracts, 4. Mr. Day noted that NASA utilizes the Joint Publications Research Service extensively as a source for translations of foreign langu;e items. Day had significance beyond the foreign publications aspect. Consequently. It appears desirable that CODIB might wish to accept an offer made by Mr. Day to visit NASA's Scientific and Technical information Facility and be briefed on current operations..t the time, he noted that the facility was moving shortly to a ndw-location and that after this move had been accomplished, a CODIB tour might be arranged.
