SUBJECT: Declassification of Testimony on Cuba
The President has received a request from Congressman Dante Fascell,
Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Inter-American Affairs for
declassification of information on Soviet'naval activities in Cuba which
was submitted to the subcommittee by.the Department of State and
Defense witnesses on September 30 and November 24, 1970 (copy of
letter from Congressman Fascell attached).
The President has asked that,the Departments of State and Defense
review the information presented to the subcommittee with a view to
declassifying as much of the information as possible consistent with
national security requirements for protection, of intelligence methods
and sources. The review should be completed and cleared with the
Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs by January 8,
1971, so that the Departments may communicate their findings
directly to Congressman Fascell.
