Dear Mr. Colby:
With the establishment of the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) on 1 July
1972, important responsibilities regarding the support of the United
States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) were assigned to this Agency.
Staff resources to carry out the standardization of foreign names
are provided by DMA, as are the services of the Executive Secretary.
In support of the Executive Secretary's obligation to assure the
orderly continuation of BGN business, I am writing to remind you that
30 September 1973 is the expiration date of the terms of office of BGN
members who have represented the Central Intelligence Agency for the
past two years.
As you know the Central Intelligence Agency is now represented
on BGN by He and the former CIA Member,
have rendered valuable service to BGN's
mission of standardizing geographic names for use in official U.S.
documents.
I respectfully invite you to appoint a member and, if you desire, a
deputy member to serve on the Board for the biennium commencing
1 October 1973. Please forward your letter of appointment to:
