Q.C. 20510 April 14, 1975 Mr. William Colby Director, Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. Colby: For the past year or so I have been assisting two well known professors in their research dealing with statistical indicators of conflict and governmental organization. The Arms Control and Disarmament Agency has been most helpful as well as the Department of Defense, but several crucial statistics remain unavailable. Would you be kind enough to determine if any of the following data is available in your Agency, and if it is open to use by the academic community? First, economic data for North Vietnam, PRC, and North Korea from 1950-1975 for the following factors: Total taxes GNP or GDP Total exports Population Agriculture'share in GNP or GDP Second, dollar costs of Soviet military programs by intercontinental attack, investment costs and RDT&E for the period 1945-1965 or any equivalent statistics comparing the US and USSR over this time period. Although the researchers are seeking data over a span of years J know they would be thankful for any information that fits into this series. I have become particularly interested in their work since it shows promise of indicating the degree to which nations are reacting to'internal events rather than the external threat. Should any of this data be more difficult to obtain or require a longer period of time, I am sure that what is available now would be-of immediate assis- tance. I appreciate your consideration.
