the Economic Intelligence Weekly (EIW)
should include a chart on unemployment.
After reviewing the matter, OER is
going to add such a chart to the set of
economic indicators published in the back
of the EIW.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
SUBJECT Unemployment Rate Chart for
EIW
1. In response to the Director's indication of
interest, we are preparing to add a chart on unemployment
rates to the set of economic indicators published weekly
in the EIW. The chart will appear similar to the present
"Industrial Production" chart. The plotted unemployment
rates will be accompanied by a reference line representing
an average of past rates of unemployment.
2. Some of the data are not readily available, and
it will be necessary to estimate unemployment rates for
France. Because of this, as well as the time needed for
preparation of plates, the new graphic will probably be
appearing in the 19 March issue of the EIW.
3. The chart will also show the number of persons
unemployed in the latest reporting period, one year earlier,
and three months earlier. Lack of comparability in the data
will be flagged by a footnote.
