Approved For Release 200 1/23 :CIA-RDP80B 001300100003-7 MRINE"MAI 7 August 1972 MM3RANDtJM FOR: The Honorable John N. Imin* II The Under Secretary of State SUBJECT: The Joint Weeks 1. Herewith are some recommendations developed in the Agency in response to my request that we a nine the effects caused by the eli 1 nation of the Joint Weeks many z nths. ago. I am also giving you a co wnta y we prepared on State Depart- ment reporting. 2. The attached review of the Joint Week& shows that it do a particularly useful contribution to the production of _ political intelligence, but its contribution to mi. itar 'intel- ligence was marginal for most countries. Our review of the cur- rent situation shows that many missions are now cabling, weekly sumaries which are a good substitute for certain aspects formerly covered by the Joint Weep. This is particularly true with respect to economic information. 3. On this basis we recorm$nd that the Joint Wee1se. be re- instituted but on a selective basis both with respect to country and to topic. Specific guidelines for implenting this recom- mendation as follows s a. The Joint Weeks should be revived for political reporting from all countries except the follng 'ran which present reporting mechanisms have proved to be adequate: A further qualification to the need for periodic political reporting is that for the countries of southern and western Africa our need could be satisfied by monthly or quarterly reporting. 5X1 5X1 Approved For Release .
