Approved For Release 2006/10/19: CIA-RDP80BO1495R0014000700 '2 2 MAR 1971 "N Review Completed" MEMORANDUM FOR: Mr. Kent B. Crane . Assistant to the Vice President SUBJECT : Bloc Propaganda Coverage on the Vice President 1. Per your 15 March letter, here is a sample of Bloc press and radio references to Vice President Agnew. As you can see, we had to go back fairly far to find rhetoric directed at the Vice President personally and none of it is particularly abusive. 2. We found no personal attacks from Peking, whose portrayal of a predatory, aggressive "U. S. imperialism" tends to ignore personalities as unimportant. In denouncing the Vice President's December 1969-January 1970 trip to Asia, Peking carped at the "puppets" he visited and roundly denounced the U. S. imperialist" policy he represented but did not attack Mr. Agnew as a person. As a rule, Moscow also concentrates on issues rather than on person- .- 72.45 _ Chief DDI Executive Staff Attachment s ODDII :tb (22 Mar 71) Distr u ion: Original - Addressee w/att 1 ER w/att & Basic DDI w/o att (cy Basic) (u'h ttlh - ODDI Chrono w/o att (cy Basic) 25X1 Approved For Release 2006/10/19: CIA-RDP80BO1495R001400070009-0 Approved For Release 2006/10/19: CIA-RDP80B01495R001400070009-0 sw~ The Honorable Richard Helms Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D. C. March 15, 1971 The Vice President's thoughts are again turning to the media--this time theirs, not ours. He has concluded that although many of our correspondents portray the Communists as mellowing, their newsmen do not reciprocate in kind in their stories about us. Moreover, the Vice President has the distinct impression that although we are making genuine efforts to begin an era of negotiations, Communist leaders, while showing interest in reducing tensions, seem to feel free at the same time to attack our policies, our leaders and our way of life. If these impressions are correct, the Vice President would like some notable examples of ''inflamed rhetoric" which has appeared in the other side's media during the past two years--Tass, Izvestia, NCNA, Radios Moscow and Peking, etc. Without wishing in any way to limit the scope of your response, one example of what might be included are any particularly potent personal attacks made by the Soviets and the Chinese Communists on the Vice President during his Asian trips. May we please hear back from you in ten days or so. Since rely, Kent B.
