Approved For Release 2005/04/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1554R003200220011-5 15 SEP 1978 SUBJECT: Notes from Conversation with Richard Hottelet of CBS, 12 September 1978 1. There is a resurgence of Muslim fundamentalism, e.g., the Muslim brothers in Egypt, activities in Pakistan, and now Iran. It would be well to understand this better. 2. The strength of Mugabe's ties to the PRC are important to understand with respect to whether he will receive Cuban/Ethiopian/ Soviet equipment and/or troops. 4. Cuban concern of the role in Africa is with respect to a non- aligned movement, not to being labeled as colonialists. a. The non-aligned summit meets every year (every other year?). There is a coordinating group at the UN, however, which the perspective host for the non-aligned summit shares. There is a head of steam gathering, however, to rotate the chairmanship and thus reduce Cuban influence as a result of being host for the next summit. It will be at a foreign minister's meeting or a sunsuit meeting that this decision has to be made. It would appear that our intervention here might not be helpful. b. The Cubans are in no way apologetic about their role in Africa. They feel it's quite proper. STANSFIELD TURNER Director Approved For Release 2005/04/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1554R003200220011-5
