Clearly our project was well received, and I am very grateful for all of your interest and effort. Attachment: As stated Approved For Release 2005/03/16 : CIA-RDP80BO1554R003300260035-4 Approved For Re d 3t16-!-CW B6 00 3 W3,414Y at The White House, 24 April 1979 I remember as a young girl in Plains watching my Grandmother day after day in a rocking chair on the front porch, gently swaying back and forth as she picked peas out of the pod. ?She seemed so tfrcec'et and frail to me. Like most children-and indeed like too many adults today-I thought elderly people couldn't do anything but sit and rack, go to church, or be'pushed around in a wheelchair, Yet now I am a grandmother-three times overt And I must tell you I certainly don't consider myself old-- or tired-or frail. Nor do I think of people like Nelson Crui ksharrk, the President's Counsel on Aging; or Esther Peterson, his advisor on Consumer Affairs; or the Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., as ready - .to retire to the front porch! They, like you he- today, represent a wealth of talent, skills, and experience our nation can ill afford to waste- - V And they..-like -have learned that as. you get older, being of- service to others keep-s you from getting elderly! .. Before you leave? I want you to.take special note of the beautiful painting on the grand staircase. zt wes painted by Lilian Whitteker when she was 84 years old_ She di? `t even begin to receive recognition for her'fine paintings until sh was in her 70's. But- Miss Whitteker was an innovative artist.. She set a marvelous example of acco,-mplishment--in spite of--or maybe even because of-- her age. She was in love with the world--and it is illuminated in her AaprtoI-edyFor Release 2005/03/16 : CIA-RDP80B01554R003300260035-4 II .
