THE MICHIGAN DAILY
University of Michigan

Dear Sirs:
Having just read your editorial on "Academics and the CIA" in
your 26 January edition, I would like to offer a constructive comment
or two.
The thrust of your editorial is that the relationship between CIA
and members of academia is always bound to be one-sided in favor of
the Agency. You note that "relatively few academics receive the
benefits Mr. Oksenberg enjoyed as a result of his secret relationship."
May I suggest to you that to the degree which an academic helps to
support his country through the CIA he is benefiting not only himself
but all other Americans. Patriotic academics like Mr. Oksenberg do
not cooperate with the CIA for the purpose of helping the CIA, but
for the purpose of helping our country.
Beyond that, let me urge you to recognize our policy of publishing
as much of our research work as we can in open literature. Enclosed
is a list of publications we have recently released. Many of these
contained important inputs from academics; many of these are of important
value to the entire academic community.
I am sure you did not intend to overlook these benefits that all
academics receive from the helpful cooperation of a few members of
that community with us.
Yours sincerer
STANSFIELD TURNER
