Approved For Release,2002/02/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1622R000W40033- FER 1975 MEMORANDUM FOR: Executive Officer Deputy Director for Administration SUBJECT : Guest Speaker List 1. I am attaching a list of the speakers we think would be of greatest interest to DDI employees. I would also like to pass along some additional names suggested by our Coordinator 25X1A of Academic Relations. They may be helpful in future scheduling. 2. On the negative side of the ledger, we suspect that weariness about things Vietnamese would make General Gavin's presen- tation less than successful. We doubt that Messrs. Rusk, Rostow, Fulbright or Eisenhower would have much to offer by way of fresh insights. And with the investigations in full flower, Harry Howe Ransom's remarks might be anticlimactic. 25X1A Distribution: Orig + 1 - Addressee DDI File (DDA) 1 - DDI Chrono Approved For Release 2002/02/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1622R000100040033-9 Administrative - Internal Use Only Approved For Releasq,Z002/02/13: CIA-RDP80BO1622R0001 Q0 40033-9 Preferred Speakers (Roughly in order of preference) Lester Brown: One of the earliest and most articulate commen- tators on the world food crisis. John Fairbank or Doak Barnett: Both are, of course, quite eminent. China watchers quarrel over which is the better. But see other recommendations - especially Michel sen erg, who offers a fresher view- point. Samuel Huntington: Very prominent in his field. Political development in the Third World should be of general interest to an Agency audience. Nicholas Katzenbach: An articulate speaker on a very pertinent subject--and, of course, active in "post-Ramparts" ad- justments. George Will: An impressive exponent of the conservative. view. John Badeau and Karl Schmidt are both excellent in their fields, though they might not appeal as much to general audiences as some of the other speakers. Don K. Price: Good on science and government. Max Lerner: Another speaker-topic combination that should, insure a good audience. Richard Neustadt: Would be a provocative speaker on either topic. Harry C. McPherson: An excellent writer, and his topic-- impact of domestic affairs on international politics-- would be timely. 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/02/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1622R000100040033-9 Approved For Relea, 2002/02/13: CIA-RDP80BO1622R0004NO40033-9 Additional Suggestions by the DOI Coordinator for Academic Relations China Michel 0ksenberg - University of Michigan - good, young, well-balanced. Was offered China NIO job. Harry Harding, Jr. - Stanford - one of the strongest, substantive young (20's) scholars available. (Whereas Fairbank and Barnett are old hands and were known for various kinds of advocacy, the two above are new and relatively more open.) General Hazel Henderson - a strong public-interest lobbyist who has a delightful way of turning conventional wis- dom about energy, population, etc., back upon those who presume to be wise. She mi ht not come because of the present investigations. has information about her. Rene D. Zentner, Manager of Forecasting, Shell Oil, Houston, Texas - can talk about the problems of planning for the future in an energy company - good insights into both the process of forecasting and energy issues per se. Wilson Clark - author of Energy for Survival and a recent piece in the Smithsonian called "It Takes Energy to Get Energy; The Law of Diminishing Returns Is In Effect." On the subject of energy and other ecological/social/economic issues. Daniel Yankelovich - pollster who has done very good work on the attitudes of American youth from 1967-1973. Recent article (Dec 1974) in Psychology Today entitled "Angry Workers, Happy Grads." His insights may also apply to other countries, or at least raise questions about how to analyze social change. 25X1A Approved For Release 2002/02/13 : CIA-RDP80BO1622R000100040033-9
