This memorandum is in response to your request in the reference. 2. A detailed study has been made of the total number of passes over the United hates by all Soviet satellites, beginning t~tith Sputnik 1 and covering all passes up to 30 June 1963. This figure came to 25X1 ^NN~~vcaa ~ v~ ~~c~ wv~iv~ivai v~^-~w~ aivw ~v~ v~w~vv ~vv w-v ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~, passes and did not include passes over the United States by the payloads of interplanetary and lunar probes which remained in earth orbits following an unsuccessful attempt to eject out of parking orbit. A breakdown of this total by individual satellites is included in Appendix A. 3. The grand total amount is some~that unrealistic, in that it 25X1 includes (passes by Sputniks 1~ 2, and 3. The details of the pay- load of these three vehicles were well publicized, and unquestionably they had no reconnaissance mission. The manned Vostok vehicles and the series of unmanned Vostok vehicles preceding the first manned launching were less publicized with regard to their payload. This group produced 25X1 crossings of the United States, a number which increases to if the crossings of Sputnik ~+ are counted after its ejection into a ~ . 'I .
