C. I.have your letter of April 28th. I fully understand the situation and am delighted that Dick will receive the National Civil Service League Award. ,Since rely, u Gordon Gray Approved For Release 2002/07/29 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R000200160018-6 FROM: Ambassador C. E. Bohlen ArAPP1@X94fw We 2002/07/29: CIA-RDP80B01676R00020016 1 APO 777, New York April 29, 1965 I was glad to get your very "official" letter concerning the nomination of Dick Helms for the Rockefeller Public Service Award in the field of Foreign Affairs. I seem to remember your letter of last June, but for the life of me I cannot lay my hands on it. I don't know what has happened to it as we usually are most careful in handling of corres- pondence. In any event, I will certainly be most prepared to back up the nomination as soon as I hear from Dr. van de Velde. The only problem is that I have already this year sent a supporting letter in for Alex Johnson and I don't know that you can do it for two in the same field. However, I will certainly do everything I can as I think Dick is really entitled to this award, which incidentally is worth considerably more than when I got it three years ago. I am sorry to learn from your letter that you are about to turn in your suit and wonder what you intend to do. I imagine return to the Army. In any case, all best wishes for whatever you will be doing and in the hope that we will meet very soon, Marshall S. Carter, Lieutenant General, USA, Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, Washington, D. C. Approved For Release 2002/07/29 :. CIA-RDP80B01676R00020019t)0 `8
