CONFIDENTIAL Approved For Release 2003/05/05 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R000400 V1W DEPARTMENT OF STATE THE DIRECTOR OF INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH WASHINGTON AUG 2 5 1965 MEMORANDUM FOR: The Honorable W. F. Raborn, Director, Central Intelligence Agency Subject: Request for a SNIE on Communism in Indonesia The Under Secretary of State has requested the preparation of a SNIE on Indonesia for Dubmission to the USIB on September 9. The Under Secretary recognizes that the current NIE, approved by USIB in July, still adequately reflects prevailing political conditions in Indonesia. He would, however, like a study that focuses specifically on the danger presented by Indonesian communism. The SNIE should examine the possibility of a Communist-oriented government coming to power in Djakarta, the impact of such a development within Indonesia, and its effects on power alignments and political trends in the Far East.
