Dear Mr. IDulles :
This is with reference to my letter of June 20, 1957,
concerning the creation of the Security Resources Panel under
the auspices of the 0DM Science Advisory Committee, pursuant
to National Security Council Action 1691-b(2). As you know,
Mr. H. Rowan Gaither, Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Ford
Foundation was appointed by the President to head this study.
It is with deep regret that I must now inform you that due
to an unexpected and severe illness, Mr. Gaither will be unable
to continue his direct association with this study. Although
we shall miss his able leadership, we are grateful for his
valuable contributions in getting the study under way.
With the concurrence of the President, Mr. Robert C. Sprague,
Chairman of the Board of the Sprague Electric Company and Mr.
William C. Foster, Vice President of the Olin-Mathieson Chemical
Corporation, have been named Director and Co-Director of the Panel
for its duration. I am confident that you will share my feeling
of good fortune in being able to secure such competent and experienced
leadership for this highly important study.
