SUBJECT : "Uuclassifteed" Comments by E*herman Kent
on the Andrew Tully Book
I. I understand that the subject rebuttal of the Andrew Tully
book is being printed in an unclassified form for attachment to
our classified "mJtuAiees in Intelligence" in a detachable form. In
addition. that 100 copies more are being printed and that all should
be ready by the first of August.
Z. This is to inform you that the Director and I take a dim
vlg of this procedure. Thor* is simply no point in getting into
know what kind of a match with a skenk. To print this rebuttal
uctassified can only result in its immediate public dissemination
( 1ch may have been the purpose in the first place) and will leave
T *y no recourse but to respond. This then puts Sherman Kout in
the--gong kind of match with the wrong kind of skunk, and will
*eve no useful purpose other than to increase the sales of Tully's
book? result in numerous comments, book reviews, letters to the
press, etc., and in general serve to continue something that appears
to be well on the way toward dying.
3. Accordingly, I desire that you either destroy all of the
unclassified printed copies and retain only enough. classified as
Seecret, to cover our files; or, as an alternative, you may classify
the rebuttal Secret and include it in the classified portion of the
"Studies in Intelligence. "
