Bloc Shipping to and from Cuba
21 November 1962
As of 0600 EST there were 22 Bloc ships en route Cuba.
Included in this total are 12 Soviet dry cargo ships, 1 re-
frigerator ship, 5 tankers;-3 passenger ships and 1 East
German dry cargo ship. Of the Soviet ships, 1 passenger
ship, the GRUZIYA, is scheduled to arrive in Havana tomorrow.
Another Soviet ship, the USSURIJSK, which loaded 7,500
tons of metal products in the Black Sea, is presently load-
ing 3,500 tons of gunny sacks in Oran, all destined for Cuba.
These sacks were offloaded by a non-bloc ship in Oran after
owners refused to proceed to Cuba. Other Soviet ships are
scheduled to load the remaining sacks soon.
At present there are 10 Soviet ships and 2 satellite
ships in Cuban ports. Of these, the ORENBURG, OKHOTSK, and
the BELOVODSK, have large hatches.
In addition to the ships en route to Cuba or in Cuban
ports, there are 12 Soviet dry cargo ships and 6 tankers re-
turning to the USSR. Among those returning are the 11 ships
carrying missiles and related equipment. Five of the mis-
sile carriers--the DIVNOGORSK, FIZIK KURCHATOV, LABINSK,
L.KNINSKY KOMSOMOL and MFTALLURG ANASOV--are returning to
Black Sea ports. Five are returning to the Baltic Sea area--
ALAPAEVSK ALEKSANDROVSK, ALMETEVSK, BRATSK and VOLGOLES. The
destination of the remaining ship, the IVAN POLZUNOV, has
not yet been determined..
The known cargoes and estimated time of arrival of the
large-hatch ships now en route Cuba are shown in the attached
table.
