Mr. Jackson showed the Director a letter from Mr. Lovett enclosing
letters from Senator Russell and Senator Saltonstall requesting that CIA
submit to the Committee CIA estimates and papers on the Korean War from
June 1, 1950, through April 1, 1951. After considerable discussion, the
Director stated that he would write the President enclosing the ktussell
and Saltonstall letters and suggesting that CIA be authorized to submit
the conclusions in pertinent national estimates after October 1, 1950,
and nothing else. The Director will also call Senator Saltonstall and
advise him of our willingness, subject to authorization, to submit this
information. He will also explain to Senator Saltonstall that the great
mass of supporting reports and information cannot be submitted due to the
necessity of protecting the sources.
