THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR

The National Conference of Christians and Jews has set the week of
February 18 through 25 for the celebration of Brotherhood Week, and
has asked that I serve as Brotherhood Chairman for the Washington
area.
Those of us who are members of the new Administration have our first
opportunity this year to fully participate in the observance of this
special week. Indicative of the special interest of the Administration
in this observance is the President's acceptance of the honorary chair-
manship. We are being given the opportunity to show our whole-4earted
interest in developing that understanding which serves as a foundation
for cooperation benefiting all citizens. We know that the success of
our society depends upon the most efficient use of human skills and re-
sources and we are actively seeking to encourage acceptance of each
individual on his or her own capacity and qualifications. These goals
we have for 52 weeks each year -- in Brotherhood Week we seek only to
re-pledge ourselves to these goals.
I feel sure that many agencies of Government already are at work on
special plans for the observance of Brotherhood Week. To better at-
tain our goals I am calling a meeting of Department and Agency Heads,
or their representatives, in the Secretary's Conference Room (Room 5160)
of this Department on January 29 at 10:30 a.m. Your cooperation in mak-
ing this brief planning meeting a success will be greatly appreciated.
