Fl- Pi Approved For Release 2008/03/03: CIA-RDP80BO1676R002900230012-1 DEPARTMENT OF STATE rHE DIRECTOR OF INTELLIGENCE AND RESEARCH WASHINGTON MAY 8 1962 Dear John: 64 1~1 s- This Department has been approached by the Swedish Em- bassy for information concerning Chinese Communist nuclear capabilities. In particular, the Swedes are interested in our views as to when the Chinese Communists might explode their first nuclear device and when they might have a small stockpile of nuclear weapons. Sweden's participation in the disarmament discussions at Geneva has engendered their interest in this question. The Swedes have been most helpful in providing us with information on Communist China obtained through their Embassy in Peking. For this reason we are particularly anxious to satisfy their request. We believe that the sanitized version of NIE 13-2-62, now scheduled for USIB consideration on May 9, would meet Sweden's requirements admirably. Could we discuss this matter at the time the sanitized estimate comes before USIB? Sincerely yours, Roger Hillman The Honorable John A. McC one, Director of Central Intelligence, Langley, Virginia.
