SUBJECT : Agency Portraits
1. At our request, Mr. John Carter Brown, Assistant Director
of the National Gallery of Art, visited Headquarters yesterday to advise
where and how to hang the Agency portraits. He limited his choice of
locations to the Entrance Lobby and the first floor corridors since we
told him we want the portraits to be hung in an area where they can be
seen by a majority of employees and visitors.
2. Mr. Brown advised against using the Entrance Lobby because
the highly-polished white marble walls would detract from the appearance
of the paintings. He also thought it would be a mistake to deface the marble
with hangers and electric outlets.
3. Mr. Brown recommended that the portraits be hung in pairs
at opposite ends of the north-south corridor which runs along the Main
Court adjacent to the Entrance Lobby. He thought that the paintings of
General Smith and Mr. Dulles, being both in civilian clothes, should be
hung together at one end and the uniformed portraits of General Donovan
and Admiral Hillenkoetter at the other. He recommended that the Admiral's
portrait be re-framed to make it more similar to the Donovan portrait.
4. He urged that we consider putting up light-colored wood panel-
ing as background for the portraits since it is considered the best background
for hanging any pictures. As it would take some time to design and manu-
facture these paneled backgrounds, if they are deemed necessary, we suggest
that we hang the portraits on the painted walls immediately and decide about
the paneling later.
