MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Central Intelligence
SUBJECT: Meeting with Representative Armistead I. Selden
1. This memorandum is for the information of the Director of
Central Intelligence.
2. On Friday, 29 June 1962, I met with Representative Selden and
advised him that Mr. Richard Goodwin, of State Department, had trans-
mitted his request to us for information concerning covert activities with
regard to Cuba. I advised that, knowing his position as Chairman of the
Inter-American Affairs Subcommittee of House Foreign Affairs, a request
had been made of the Director's office for review of the executive policy
against individual congressional briefings and the reservation of such
3...-,information for briefing of our parent Committees. I stated that I wanted
to assure the Congressman that this was not a personal matter, we appreciated
fully his position, but are unable to comply with his request at this time.
Mr.. Selden indicated that he feels that nothing is being done with regard to
Cuba and that he desired to give the Department of State and the Central
Intelligence Agency a chance to provide contrary information before taking
this matter to the floor of the House. He further requested that I so report.
3. Although visibly disturbed, Mr. Selden was courteous. No
further action by Legislative Counsel is anticipated.
