Dear Mr. Dulles:
Upon my return from the Western Pacific this
last weekend I received General Cabell's letter
regarding your decision pertaining to my forthcoming
assignment.
I am honored, and indeed very grateful, that you
want me to take over the important position of
Coordinator on your Staff..
General Cabell has charged me with keeping the
information to myself until.my successor has. been
determined and announced. Accordingly, I cannot make
any firm plans to disengage from this post until the
decision is reached. I hope that when the selection
is made that I may be the first person to;inform
Admiral Felt.
I am writing General Cabell to request, among
other things, a reconsideration of what I. hope is
not a firm reporting date of 1 June. My experience
here shows that the Agency and military administrative
mechanisms do not move that fast when a change of
station is involved. As all manner of transportation
from Honolulu is heavily booked weeks in advance this
summer, we find that about four months lead time is
required to be sure of accommodations for shipment of

personnel, household goods and automobile. This week,
for example, we have completed transportation arrange-
ments for our staff officers who leave Honolulu in
June for duty in Headquarters.
