N Y. April 12, 1961 STAT STAT STAT Hon. Allen W. Dulles is an old friend and colleague of mine. He graduated from; Harvard in 1926 and from Columbia Law School in 1929. 1 met him shc, rtly thereafter when we were both young lawyers at Root, Clark, Buckner, Howland & Ballantine. He re- malned there until, following Pearl Harbor, he was commissioned in the Navy and serv- ed on active combat duty throughout the war. Thereafter he joined us here at IT&T not long after I had also come here, and he has worked faithfully and effectively pith us ever since, with much of his experience overseas. Xi how tells me, in confidence, that with his children grown up and a respectable collection of young grandchildren, he would like to abandon the commercial-legal life that falls to his lot in a big corporation like this, in favor of the public aiet'vice. He specifically mentioned your agency as affording interesting, useful and challenging possibilities, and I said I should be glad to write you. I do so because he seems to me to have the qualities and attributes that are indispensable in your agency. Incidentally, he is a member of the Century Association and is a good friend and sailing companion of Elihu Root, Jr. I am diffident about writing to you when I know you have so many vital questions on your mind. On the other hand, I may be doing you a favor by making his avail- ability known to you. He and I would both understand perfectly if you simply turn- ed this letter over to your personnel or recruiting associates. It is entirely un- necessary for you to acknowledge this letter, as far as I am concerned. If you or your designee should have any interest in communicating with I sug- gest that it would be appropriate to reach him at f- I I 'With kindest personal regards, Sincerely, STAT STA STA Approved For Release 2002/07/29 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003500100010-4 Approved For Release 2002/07/29 : CIA-RDP80BO1676R003500100010-4 May 2, 1961 Memo for John C.
