Dear Henry:
It was very thoughtful of you to send me a copy
of #den'a Memoirs.
As you can well understand I have mixed feelings
about certain parts of this particular book. I doubt whether
the author's presentation of Suez will go down as "history,'.
Tragically# he is an embittered man and it might
have been bettor if he had written his book at a later date.
In the early 130. 1 got to know him extremely well when we
were together for many months in Geneva at the disarmament
discussions during the League of Nations days. Then I had a
high regard for him. Hs had many fine qualities. I always
felt that his declining health and other personal problems had
greatly affected his effectiveness during the late years. In
any event I appreciate your thought in sending me the book and
I have been reading it with interest.
Sincerely.
