Allen Dulles, Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Dulles:
I am a twenty year old collefre student about to enter icy conicr
year at Georgetown University. As most-,of my generation is, I ar
deeply aware of the critical state of affairs that our country f l.`_=nc
itself encountering this year, a state which I realize must c:hanva
soon lest we and the whole of civilization be dragcred ihto a terr'_b"me
debacle that can destroy this cherished Western Civilization of cur
Christian era.
I know that it is not my place nor within my capacity to 1:-ropcsre
any measures, but I do feel it my duty to remind you and to rqe
you to do as much as possible in warding off and destroying this
awful spectre of International communism. Every day, I read in th?
papers of new inroads of Communism; the riots in Japan, the (ubar
situation, the agitations in Italy and the threats of Jrusc,ev
Mao Tze-Tung to bury us" and see 'dour socialist chi' dren." "'iLesF.
as you well realize, are not isolated incidents; they are part of it,
master scheme intended to ridicule, taunt, and ultimately destrey
the United States and its allies throughout the free world.
Maybe, it's a hard thing to say, but I think the United rater
has gone soft on its ideals. The people in a great many instancs;
are apathetic to the world situation caring only for a softe-V 11f=
and a way to quick riches. The ideals and the ideas of. men ]ike
Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, George Washinton, Abraham Lireoln..
and Woodrow Wilson are mere words in a history book, just lek, rneC
for an examination but never kept within our hearts fbrapplIcaticm
in a world that seriously needs a moral and ethical upi-ftinic:,
have to learn, and learn quickly that a new course is necessary,
are too soft on ourselves and on our enemy. We must never ar?ee
the fact that Communism is here to stay and that our beet chu.nce
peace is co-existence. How the Kremlin bosses must laugh at us
when we are willing to accept co-existence, They know full ell * fat:
co-existence is a victory for their side, and we must never rive
them an inch. We must not only stand our ground; we must sur*-e for?w .rd
to make this world a "safer place for Democracy."
Respectfully yours,
r-
