I appreciate your letter of JiLue 7. 1960 with
its enclosure which I have read with care. Needless to say,
we are giving most careful consideration to developmzeats in
Japan in relation to the President's visit and have received
a wealth of reports on the siltation as it is developing. Ta
col the trip on American initiative would certainly inear-
groat victory for the Communists and anti-American forces
in the Far East.
On the other hand, we appreciate that the re ire
risks inherent in a situation as explosive as that in Japan today.
Certainly all of the factors will be considered over the corning
days.
Did you send a copy of this message to the Depart-
,
of State? If not, I suggest you might do no, or if you preff r
I could pass along to them a copy of what you have sent n w.
Again, many thanks for bringing this to my attent
Faithfully.

The attached cable has just come to me
from Tokyo. It is signed by Yasaka Takagi, Professor
Emeritus at Tokyo University, and Shigeharu Matsumoto,
Executive Director of the International House of Japan.
Because of my respect for and confidence in
the two men, I ast forwarding a copy to you. Both men
have pretty much devoted their lives in the last few
years to fostering better understanding between Japan
and the United States. They work closely together,
not only in relation to the International House but in
connection with all other matters relating to U.S.-
Japanese friendship, where they feel that they can be
constructive and helpful.
With warmest best wishes, I am
Sincerely,
The Honorable All :' " i1lles
