Dulles, Director Central Intelligence Agency 2430 E Street Washington, D. C. As a member of our National Sponsors Committee, you will be pleased to know that the Board of Directors, at its last meeting, established the Lafayette Gold Medal Award and resolved that this medal be presented, from time to time, to an individual who has made a great contribution toward furthering friendship and understanding between the people of France and the people of the United States, It was the unanimous decision that the first recipient of this award be General Alfred M. Gruenther. It is to be presented to him at a dinner in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria on Tuesday evening, May 27th, 1958. The General will be with us on that evening to accept the award. I am writing you at this time so that you may have this information well in advance of any public announcement, and so that you may reserve the date on your calendar and be with us on this memorable eventing. The charge for the dinner has been fixed at $25.00 per cover, or $250,00 a table of ten. This charge, as you can well understand, will make it possible for the Foundation to have this function without any cost on its part, but will of course not net any income which can be used in connection with our scholarship program. There will of course be no solicitation at this dinner. I hope that you will begin to think of some of your friends and associates you may wish to have us invite to this dinner. Will you please forward such names to our office so that they may be included in the invitation list. I look forward to greeting you and your friends on that evening.
