MEMORANDUM FOR: Director of Central Intelligen
SUBJECT: Status of William E. Colby's Manuscript
. 1. Action Requested: None. This paper is prepared for your meeting
this afternoon with Mr. Colby.
2. Background: In the event the status of Mr. Colby's manuscript is dis-
cussed in your meeting, there are two unresoed issues at this point. The
first relates to Chapter 13 and his recounting of his press contacts to protect
(a copy of the pertinent portions of Chapter
13 are attached). A/DDS&T, has reviewed Mr. Colby's
latest proposal and objects to reference to the second mission of the I STAT
but has suggested an alternate approach that would not relate to
the degree of success while providing a basis for dealing with the press.
Mr. Colby feels this statement is required to justify his actions in going to the
press to maintain the cover story. The second unresolved matter relates to six
pages received from Mr. Colby on 2 November which outline a typical day for
the DCI. This is now being circulated to the various Directorates for their com-
ments. Mr. Colby has accepted our requests for deletions to date. The DDO
has given a green light to the manuscript as adjusted. Mr. Colby further has
agreed to ft rn_ish the Agencl, with a copy of the galley proofs for our final
review.
