In response to a-request from Rick Inderfurth, Dr. Brzezinski's assistant, two sets of the following unclassified atlases produced by CIA-were passed to him Maps of the World's Nations Issues in the Middle East Israel and Borderlands Peoples' Republic of China Peoples' Republic-of China Administrative Atlas USSR Agricultural Atlas Moscow Street Guide Indian Ocean Atlas 2. Inderfurth had also inquired about what other atlases were being prepared. More than 150 maps were entered this year and the quality was outstanding! We believe the competition is fulfilling its goal of increasing awareness of, and interest in, good map design. This years panel of judges was chaired by George F. Jenks of the University of Kansas and included: Richard E. Dahlberg Professor of Geography Northern Illinois University Paul J. Pugliese Cartographer Time Magazine Elaine S. Hamilton Medical Exhibits Designer National Institutes of Health Albert W. Ward Representing ACSM Cartography Division - The judges spent an entire day evaluating the maps. Quality was high and decisions were difficult. In the end they selected 13 blue ribbon and 18 honorable mention. The R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co. award for best student entry went to Keith Schoendoerfer of California State University at Northridge for his map of Santa Catalina Island. The winners were displayed at the ACSM Spring Convention in Washington, D.C. (February 27-March 5) and will also be displayed at the AAG Convention in Salt Lake City (April 24-27 1977). We hope to arrange for additional displays throughout the year. We request that you please send us two additional copies of your map so that one may become part of the permanent collection of the Library of Congress,. and the other may be used in future displays.
