POSTAL SERVICE BUDGET HEARINGS SCHEDULED
Rep. James Rt. I-:anley (D-N.Y. ), Chairman of the House.. Subcommittee on Postal
..
Operations and Service, announced today that hearings would begin on the Postal
Service's annual budget on March 15, 1977. The first hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m.
in Room 311, Cannon House Office Building.
Postmaster General Benjamin.F. Baila.r is scheduled to testify for the Postal
Service.
The hearings are being held as a result of the passage of Hanley-sponsored
legislation last year. Public Law 94-421, among other things, required the Postal
Service to submit to Congress the budget material it gives to the Office of Management
and Budget in connection with the President's budget making process. Also required
is a comprehensive statement of the Postal Service's compliance with the policies
stated in the Postal Reorganization Act.
Oversight hearings are required to be held yearly on or before March 15.
"Our ability to review the Postal Service's budget is an important part of our
oversight functions," Hanley said. "The material developed will be very helpful to
us in trying to pinpoint the source of Postal problems,"
Hanley said that further hearing dates would be scheduled, if necessary.
