By letter of 1 June 1977, you requested that this Agency provide
you a copy of each document produced in the last five years which contains
a significant analysis specifically focused on competition in energy markets.
These documents were requested to support a Department of Justice effort
to formulate a statement of antitrust policy on the energy sector of the
economy.
The Agency has published no documents which would appear to meet
the Department's interests in this regard. While much of our energy analysis
and reporting concerns OPEC operations, and so might indirectly reflect
upon competition in energy markets, we have not directly or indirectly
analyzed the competitive practices of U.S. energy firms.

SUBJECT : Request for Assistance from the Attorney General.
1. Action Requested: Recommend you sign and transmit the attached
letter to the Attorney General.
2. Background: The Attorney General has requested that the Agency
provide the Department of Justice with all documents we have produced in
the last five years which contain a significant analysis specifically focused
on competition in energy markets. The documents are requested to support
an effort by the Department to formulate a statement of antitrust policy on
the energy sector of the economy. The Attorney General's letter is attached,

4. However, the Directorate of Intelligence indicates that our files
contain no documents which are considered by them to meet this definition.
