MEMORPNDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Conversation with Secretary of State
1. After today's Face the Nation TV program featuring'
Secretary Vance, I called him to thank him for his helpful and
constructive remarks (see attached).
2. I told the Secretary those remarks mean much to all of
us in CIA. I said we have a tough job to do; we don't expect
always to be patted on the head; but that we don't desire to
have an undeserved cloud of "impropriety" or "illegality"
hovering over us; and we appreciate the way he and the President
have stood up to the plate in countering the allegations. -
3. The Secretary thanked me for calling. He said his
remarks were the least he could do. I pledged him the continuing
support of the intelligence community. He said he was most grateful.
