Many thanks for your letter of November 4th, with the
information about Gordon McLendon's idea to produce a television
series about the CIA. It is good to know there are people like
that who really want to help.
In the past several months we have had two or three similar
proposals. But none have gotten off the ground for one reason
or another. The primary problem in each case, however, was
finding the story material necessary to sustain a series without
getting into areas of sensitivity due to sources and methods.
In addition, our mission is very unlike the FBI's and doesn't
really lend itself to the law enforcement format. I'm sure you
understand these problems very well.
However, I would be happy to meet with Gordon at a mutually
convenient time and place to talk over his ideas in greater detail.
Please ask him to get in touch with (telephone
to set up something.
Thanks again for taking the time to brirg us together with
this idea. IV hope something can be worked out.

Gordon McLendon of Dallas, Texas is a friend of mine who is
vitally interested in helping strengthen the image of the CIA
in this country. He recently gave a first class speech to the
Association of Retired Intelligence Officers. The speech was
put into the Congressional Record by Senators Goldwater and
Randolph.
Gordon McLendon has built a large communications empire - radio,
TV, etc. He knows the communications business inside out.
Gordon would like to see CIA be the subject of a TV series like
the FBI series which has done so much for the bureau. I told
Gordon that when?I was Director we considered such a plan with
ABC but that we ran into stumbling blocks over final control
of editorial content. Gordon assures me that this would not be
a problem.
I know how busy you are. Would you be willing to visit with
Gordon McLendon-for-a bit, perhaps turning him over to Capt.
Hetu after that?
Gordon has all the money he needs. He is motivated in this
purely by his conviction that we need a strong CIA supported
by the American people. He has noted, with interest, your efforts
along the same line.
He would fly up to Langley at your convenience.
