The importance of our Annual Meetings is widely recognized, evidenced by the fact that a large number of leading institutions and organizations both in the United States and in other countries appoint delegates to attend them. If it is not feasible for your representatives to make a special trip for the purpose, you may know of persons who will be in or near Philadelphia on April 5 and 6, and whom you would like to designate as delegates. When we receive from you the names and addresses of your delegates, we shall be glad to communicate with them directly and give them further details. We hope you will act promptly, since we wish to include your organiza- tion in the list printed in our program. The July, 1974 issue of The Annals will contain the platform addresses and will be distributed to all members of the Academy. Those who are not members may order copies if they desire. MARVIN E. There are no bylaws, no obligations, no membership- no dues, no treasury, no officers (all are "Honorary"), no business meetings. The Constitution, in its entirety, reads: ",tlembers must be good fellows with no axes to grind who speak our language. " In addition, the closest the Society has to a set of "bylaws" is the information from the 1903 dinner invitation quoted on the reverse side of this sheet. The purposes of the Society are: the promotion of international amity, cultural exchange, trade and commerce, and movement of peoples around the earth in the cause of peace and friendship; the encouragement of scientific exploration and investigation on the earth and throughout the universe; and the fellowship of men who have visited, and performed (in the words of Lord Cromer, British Ambassador from Great Britain to the United States, at our 1971 dinner) "deeds of derring-do" at The Ends of the Earth. The Society was formed following the Battle of Manila Bay, at a dinner held to celebrate the camaraderie and fellowship between the American and British at that ends-of-the-earth location. The dinner was such a success that it was decided on the spot that it should be perpetuated on both sides of the Atlantic. The British Section was soon organized in London and the American S?rtion later in New York. The American Section generally meets on the first Friday in December at The Union Club in New York. A dinner meeting normally consists of cocktails, dinner, and entertainment, generally a short talk, with slides or film, by a member or guest, recording his explorations or travels at or to-or even beyond-the Ends of the Earth. A feature is a brief talk by the senior representative of the United Kingdom attending. The British Section, still going strong, holds two dinners a year in London, addressed by a distinguished speaker. One of its past speakers was, as a matter of interest, Sir Winston Churchi',. Each Section welcomes members of the other as guests. For three-quarters of a century the American Section membership has consisted of: leading professional, business, church, literary, and social figures; distinguished explorers; diplomats; government officials; and high-ranking officers of our Armec Forces, active and reserve. The guiding force in the American Section during most of the past three decades was Reverend Gilbert A. Darlington. Information about membership and brief nomination forms can be obtained by writing to the Honorary Secretary, or members may write letters to him to nominate for admission qualified gentlemen who have, either literally or figuratively, beer to The Ends of the Earth `:..good `eelows wit/i no axes to grind who speak our language.
