Thank you very much for your very kind invitation to address the
Los Angeles World Affairs Council. I fully recognize the Importance
of an opportunity to address such a significant group of our most re-
sponsible citizens. At this time, however, with my confirmation just
behind me, I would prefer to let some time pass so that I may fully
learn my new responsibilities and then be in a position to speak from
a better base of knowledge and familiarity.
I have every intention in the future of accepting invitations such
as yours and would only like to beg your indulgence for a period prior
to making definite arrangements. If it is satisfactory to you, perhaps
I can get in touch with you sometime during the winter or spring to see
whether some schedule might be mutually convenient during 1974.
