On March 11, 1968, the President issued a memorandum approving
the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (X3.4) as
a Federal Standard. The President also approved the Standard Code
for Information Interchange on Magnetic Tape (X3.22) and for
Paper Tape (X3.6) when applied to computer operations.
The General Services Administration is now in the process of
formulating a method whereby Federal Departments and agencies can
obtain these standards as well as future standards in this category
at reduced costs through centralized procurement. In order to
accomplish this it is necessary to obtain from each Federal
Department and agency an indication of the total number of copies
necessary for their internal requirements. The composite of these
requirements will serve as a base for the establishment of a stock
level.
As definitive procedures for the distribution of standards are'
developed, you will be advised.
The statement of your requirements is requested within 30 days after
the date of this letter and should be addressed to the Office of
Automated Data Management Services, Technical Developments Division,
801 19th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20405, Attention: Mr. D.
L. Shoemaker.
