WASHINGTON, D.C. 20505
MEMORANDUM FOR: Dr. Patt Derian
Coordinator for Human Rights and- Humanitarian Affairs
Department of State
FROM : Cord Meyer, Jr.
SUBJECT : Status of Human Rights in Mainland China and Cambodia
In response to your request of 14 June for such information as
we may have on the status of human rights in Communist China and
Cambodia, we have done a quick review with the following results:
1. At Tab A is a copy of a Staff Note of the East Asia
component of the Office of Current Intelligence, published
on 29 June 1976. This is a good summary of conditions in
Cambodia as known to us last year.. If you want an update
on this, please let me know. Please note that the classifi-
cation is secret.

3. At Tab B is a copy of the testimony before the
Committee on International Relations of the House of
Representatives given by the Department on the subject of
human rights in North Korea in which you may also be interested.
In addition, we are reviewing some new information we have on labor
camps conditions in Communist China and I would hope to get something
on this to you in the near future.
