Congressional Request for your Appearance
at Hearing on My Lai Incident on 9 June
1. I lof Legislative Counsel called from the Hill at
1500 hours to report that the Special Investigating Subcommittee of
the House Armed Services Committee would like you to appear on
Tuesday, 9 June. at 1400 hours. This Subcommittee, which is chaired
by Representative Hebert of Louisiana, is investigating the My Lai
incident. The Subcommittee's request was delivered orally to
by Mr. John Reddan, the Subcommittee Counsel.
2. Mr. Reddan said that the Subcommittee did not want' to talk
to you about Agency business but to hear your views in your former
capacity as Commanding General, III Marine Corps Amphibious Forces
in Vietnam. He said that it probably would be a short session.
3. The hearing will be on the record in that a transcript of the
session will be taken. It will be classified, however, and will not be
subject to subsequent declassification and release according to
Mr. Reddan. The Subcommittee has just returned from a visit to
Vietnam and My Lai. It is scheduled to meet with General Westmoreland
the day after your appearance.
