MEMORANDUM FOR: Mr. Richard Lehman
SUBJECT: NIB
1, I was struck this morning by the bulk of the NIB. Sire!
the "charter" of this publication encourages slsnderne: s, end
since DIA is making proposals which could have the efi:"ect of
adding fat. I am moves! to comment.
2. The 30 October NIB contains 18 articles, two iter_i in
For the Record, and Z2 pages. I would say (on the basis of soma
decidedly unscientific rumination) that two-articles (the one on
I Icould easily have bee :
e m to or. at best, .night qualify as candidates for a ziilitai.y,
supplement. Four articles (South Vietnam infiltration, ClAuese
ve made docent items For the Record. Of the two items its F= r
the Record, the one the USS is quite specialized, s.nd the
other, on seems marginal because it is
probably premature n terms of reader interest).
One can certainly quarrel with those judgments. Irutfh-
point is that the book was inflated (and. excluding Saturday and
Monday editions, the NIB has been averaging about 17 page s
during October). I only urge you when you get a chance to take
a look and perhaps cot*u el your editors to that effect. Inter all.,
I see no point in providing ammunition to anyone who might seek
to force specialized military articles into the main bod j of the
publication.
