MEMORANDUM FOR: AD/DCI/IC
SUBJECT : Murphy Commission
. 1. Mr.. Tom Reckford of the Commission called this
afternoon stating that this was his last day and he was trying to
arrange for disposition of a few remaining documents. He asked
for advice as to whether it was permissible to furnish them to
Mr. Edwin A. Thompson at the Federal Archives.
2. I asked Mr. Reckford as to the classification and he
said there were four transcripts involved, one of which was
classified I and consisted of a transcript of testimony
by the Secretary of Defense. Three others were classified SI/TK.
I told Mr. Reckford I did not know what the clearance level of
Mr. Thompson was and I would have to check and call him back.
3. After checking with the Compartmented Information
Branch and determining that Thompson was cleared for SI-TK
but not 0 I called Mr. Reckford and advised him of this fact.
I suggested to him that the Commission might want to send these
transcripts to the departments or agencies involved and simply
keep a record that this action had been taken. He did not know
whether the Commission would want to do this. I said with regard
to the Odocuments, they could not be furnished to Mr. Thompson
unless he had received such clearance and appropriate briefing.
I suggested that if the Commission wanted to do this, they should
be in touch with the DoD.
4. Mr. Reckford indicated that arrangements had previously
been made for the Archivist to receive the material of the Commission
and that these four transcripts were the only ones which posed a
problem.
