Approved Fo lea T5f1"1L2 "&-I OR012 01800040058-1 29 March 1968 Morning Meeting of 29 March 1968 DD/I reported that General Maxwell Taylor has asked CIA to respond to several questions concerning Vietnam. The Director concurred that it might be well to ask General Taylor's forbearance in levying requirements on the already overburdened intelligence analysts. Godfrey advised that the Israelis sallied forth against the Jor- danians again early this morning. Godfrey pointed out that the CIB item reporting the sealing of the Polish/German border was exaggerated and based on an over- drawn report by the U. S. Mission in Berlin. What actually has happened appears to be selective screening of individuals crossing the border. 25 D/ONE reported that the Pakistan Estimate is ready. 25 DD/S recounted the recent experience of an Agency recruiter who, upon arriving at a college campus, was alarmed to see a num- ber of posters inscribed "CIA Retreat." It developed that the college was on the eve of a spiritual retreat of the Campus Interfaith Associ- ation. -.7 Approved For Release 2005/11/23 : CIA-RDP80R01284A001800040058-1 Approved For~le 80R01 281WO1 800040058-1 Warner reported that the briefing of Senator Thurmond's staff representative yesterday went well. Warner noted that the Smather s -Williams substitute tax bill contained a personnel freeze clause. CIA was included on the floor of the Senate yesterday as one of those agencies exempted from the freeze. Warner advised thati ill be meeting with Congressman Chamberlain concerning the latter's trip to Southeast Asia last Febru- ary. DD/P observed that the overdrawn report of the U. S. Mission in Berlin concerning the Polish/German border is not a new tendency on the part of that element. 25 DD/P noted that Headquarters now has the transcript of Gar- rison's interview on Dutch television which includes a number of out- landish allegations and statements. The Director reported that yesterday's SIG meeting put the fin- ishing touches on Step 1 of the personnel reduction exercise. The Director congratulated the Executive Director and the DD/P on their excellent performance in managing the Agency's end of the reduction. Executive Director advised that he has received a classified report from Ambassador Parsons' Step 4 committee which emphasizes that a significant effort will be made to examine all overseas intelli- gence activity with a view toward striking economies. He said that the Director will want to take careful cognizance of the Step 4 com- mittee's desire to deal with the various elements of the intelligence community. The Director noted that Ambassador Bohlen inquired concerning the intelligence analysis of the MOL, and the DD/S&T confirmed that rapid progress is being made. DD/I and DD/S&T concurred in the Director's suggestion that Ambassador Bohlen be informed that a final report will be ready within the next two weeks.
