ROK Forces to Laos The question of sen ing ROK forces to Laos was settled. The President will inform ;he that public opinion with the U. S. would not support the sending caf ROK forces to Laos in view of the fact that U. S. forces are still tied up in Korea -- if U. S. forces are needed to help defend South Korea, it seems obvious that all available ROK forces should bye retained in South Korea. 2. South Asia 25X1C10b 25X1 C 25X1 C The Vice President stressed the importance of using UN agencies in South Asia wherever possible. Stas s en Report In addition to the notes of his briefing which Mr. "Stassen furnished the DCI and which were distributed at the Deputies' meeting on 5 March, Mr. Stassen also noted that Japan was holding back on her economic development to a certain extent in order to avoid having to pay inordinately large reparations to Indonesia and the Philippines. ' Approved For Release 2000/05/30 -ICIA-RDP$0R01443R000200170010-2 Mr. Stassen noted particularly the morale problem on Taiwan and the great need of the Chinese Nationalists for some hope, suggesting that we hold out to them the possibility of return if uprisings should take place agad nst the Communist regime on the mainland. Mr. Stassen mentioned favorably the development of the Indonesian police and recommended that they be further built up as rapidly as possible. 5.
