At Mr. Knochela request I receive on behalf STAT of General Carter. had telephoned in to say that he had STAT some interesting ideas which he?wished to try out on the Agency. STAT 2. after the usual amenities of expressing interest in he hatch, eta. of General Carter, said that for years STAT had been building a side-looldng rade* for the Air Force and that they had recently started to give consideration. to the possibilities of a vertical- looking radar. They had discussed this with Air Force EST) in Boston and had received an enthusiastic response with the iesult that they were now scheduled to give a briefing to General Pierce and selected members of the Foreign Technology Division at Wriiiht?Patterson in ?Dayton on next Monday. The purpose of his visit *as to inquire if the Agency would be interested in a elmila development. He said they thought they could achieve about a one-fo4Tresolution with a radar that would have a range Of 100-300 miles. I asked him whether they had envisaged any problem with variations in speed of objects in space, pointing out that they could probably range from stationary to 18, 000 miles an hour or more, and he said they did not envisage diffbeitties in achieving a lock-on but that their people in their STAT pituftt,were still in the thinking stage co the details. 1 advised him that wodd check with the proper people and be in touch with him. 3. 2 talked to Dr. Wheaton who indicated that he would like to have a similar type briefing for hist people, is arranaina this for Wednesday, 20 May. at lp:30 and wilt hSVI in touch with either Mr. Bannerman or Mt.
