Approved or Release 2005/08/12 : CIA-RDP80R ~20R000700100048-8 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY WASHINGTON, D.C. 20505 9 September 1972 Major General Alexander M. Haig, Jr., USA Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs The White House Dear Al, I am not much of a note writer, but did want to'send this tangible expression of my pleasure at the putative doubling of the stellar quotient on both of your shoulders. A friend's advancement is always welcome news, doubly so when the recognition and promotion involved is so richly deserved. The news of your impending shift to be Vice Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army stimulates more mixed emotions. I am naturally delighted for you -- to a professional in any fiela, advancement to a senior position of great responsibility within his profession must always be gratifying and you are clearly an outstanding professional soldier. Also, I am certain that your selection for that position will be of great benefit to the U. S. Army. It is a post you will fill with distinction and to which you will bring energy, vision and a fresh, broad-gauged outlook (not to mention minor matters such as competence). From a purely selfish standpoint, however, I hate to see you translated from your present incarnation. Working with you has always been a pleasure. Furthermore, among the many contributions you have made in your current position -- and far from the least -- has been the much appreciated one of facilitating and assisting the endeavors of those of us who toil in related vineyards.. Your colleagues in other government components have had many occasions to be grateful for the quiet, effective way in which you have helped clarify requests, straighten out deadlines, and generally furnish all assistance possible within the parameters of security and the instructions under which you yourself were operating.
