12 April 1973
For the past several weeks I have been trying to track
something down and I am writing you on the off chance that you
might be able to shed light on the mystery involved. At some
point within the past year, I apparently loaned my copy of Donald
Lancaster's The Emancipation Of' French Indochina (Oxford,
1961) to someone. This was my only copy and since the book
is out of print, no other appears to be available for purchase.
I recall with pleasure our conversation prior to your
departure for Vietnam. Unless my memory is playing tricks,
I think you asked for suggestions regarding books or articles
that you and your husband might profitably read. I would
appreciate it very much if you would check your own memory
(and possibly bookshelves) to ascertain if by any chance I
might have loaned this Lancaster volume to you. This is a
shot in the dark on my part but since all other shots have
proved fruitless, I thought I would try this one.
I hope all goes well with .you both and you are both-
enjoying your sojourn in Vietnam. I look forward to seeing
you whenever I can get out there and I hope that at least one
planned visit will actually take place.
Best regards.
Sincerely yours,
George A. Carver, Jr.
