Approved For Release 2002/09/30 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R000100080023-2 ER 11-9540/a 12 DEC % le Estes Kefauver, tad States Washington 25, U. C. Dear SonatO? l efauver: Yerdr letter of November 27 stated that a constituent bad brought to your attention a report by Dr. **Is Fabian that about ISO young Hungarians are being held by the regime for execution following their 18th birthday. We are, of course, deeply concerned by reports of this nature, and In *Us case have done everything, possible to obtain evidence concerning ,mss particular statement. We are able neither to cooftem nor deny the report of Dr. Fabian. We tue inclined to believe that the best available evidence on this general subject has been brought together in the report that Sir Leslie M , until reeently New Zealand Ambassador to the United States, r iy made to the United Nations on the Hungarian situation. This report clearly indicates the continuance of systematic communist repression in that country. The overwhelming vote is the UN an December 4 in favor of Sir Lesliee's resolution indicates that a majority of dko, flee nations of the world agrees with his views. It may interest you to know that on October 17, 1959, a press spokes UUM 01 the Hungarian communist regime, Lasslo Gysros, admitted, a ccosdin& to a Reuters correspondent, that there have been 31 executions state the "U )post trials" of last February and March. This admission is icularly significant because the regime denied in the UN General Assembly in 1958. that any trials were being hold, or would be held in the future, for revolutionary activity in *October of 1956. We will send to your office under separate cover a copy of Sir Leslie's report as of possible interest to your constituent. Please call on us-if you have further questions. Sincerely. SIGNED Allen W.
