Dulles Director of Central Intelligence Central Intelligence Agency 2430 E Street Washington, D. C. March 17, 1959 The Faculty and Board, of Trustees of Bradley University would greatly appreciate the privilege of conferring upon you an honorary doctor's degree at our Commencement Convocation on Sunday, May 31. In recent years, it has been our pleasure to confer Bradley's highest honor upon such outstanding Americans as Charles F. Kettering, Neil McElroy, Richard M. Nixon, and Adlai Stevenson. We believe that you are equally deserving of such recognition because of your outstanding contributions to our security and way of life. In addition, the Bradley National Alumni Association has requested me to invite you to be the speaker at their annual banquet on Saturday evening, May 30, in the Bradley University Field House. The subject of the 20 to 30 minute talk would be left entirely up to you. We recognize that it is difficult for you to leave the nation's capitol for an extended period. Your presence would be required here only from 6 p.m. Saturday evening, May 30, through 10 p.m. Sunday, May 31. We could make arrangements both on campus and at the Hotel Pere Marquette in Peoria for you to be reached at any moment. We would, of course, provide an honorarium which would more than cover your travel expense. On behalf of the Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Board of Trustees of Bradley University, we sincerely hope that it will be possible for you to accept either or both of these invitations. Cordially, Harold P. Rodes President Approved For Release 2003/05/23 : CIA-RDP80R01731 R000300010019-2 STAT Approved For Release 2003/05/23 : CIA-RDP80RO1731 R000300010019-2 20 March 1959 Bradley University was established in 1897. It is coeducational. It has 2888 students and 157 teachers. As all readers of sports pages know, every year it has one of the Nation's best basketball teams. It gives to Peoria, Illinois, a good academic atmosphere which overcomes, in part in some minds, the linking of Peoria with whiskey and crime; it is a great distilling town. I would think that this recognition by an accredited university like Bradley would be acceptable to the Director. Should the Director accept, the letter should state, as always, that he will not accept an honorarium to cover his expenses. RECOMMENDATION: That the Director accept this honor and that he deliver the principal address at the Bradley National Alumni Association banquet on Saturday evening, May 30, 1959. 'alaulay J.
