Tokyo, August 25, 1959.
I have just received your good letter of August 19 and am
sending you a 'reply at once to let you know that I am forwarding
your tter to oday. Actually, he is resting at
I land will not be in Tokyo for at least another week, so I
oug it best to send your letter to him at once by registered
mail rather than to hold it here in Tokyo.
I am-sure it is wise for Janet not to undertake the long
trip out to Tokyo for the memorial service on September 9. I
am greatly honored to have been asked to represent the Dulles
family, and I will write you all after the memorial service.
News of Foster's death was received with sadness and
sorrow throughout Japan, whose people rightly regarded him
as their great benefactor. The memorial services on September
9, which were proposed and organized by private Japanese
initiative, are but a small indication of the esteem in which
Foster was held in Japan and the lasting regard the Japanese
people had for him. Wahwee and I, of course, will never forget
his wonderful kindness during the years we were so closely
associated with him.
This little note is in haste but carries with it, as always,
my very best.
Sincerely,
I W `
